Ammo Ammo, Who’s Got The Ammo?

There has been all kinds of speculation recently about where our ammunition has gone. Lots and lots of speculation.

1. We’re fighting two wars.

2. The Chinese are buying up huge amounts of copper.

3. The military has decided to destroy their brass so it can’t be reloaded.

4. Obama and his henchmen have conspired to . . . .

I have no way to verify any of this stuff. But I think it’s possible, maybe even likely, that all of these things are in play. We are fighting a bunch of wars, although back when I was young, we were fighting a really long war in Vietnam and we always seemed to have cheap ammo on the farm.

And it is likely the Chinese are buying up copper, as would be expected of any developing economy. But I don’t see houses going without copper pipes, so I would think the Earth can supply enough copper. Sounds like the Chinese would drive the price of copper higher, making ammo more expensive, but not drying it up like we’re seeing.

My understanding is that the military didn’t actually follow through on its threat to destroy its once-used brass. Although, I have no idea how that can be verified. Those people are sneaky. I believe “sneaky” is part of their job description.

And then we come to the X factor: Obama and his henchmen. There is no doubt that Obama is a gun hater. There is no doubt that if he thought he could take every gun in the country and melt it down, he’d do it. And there is even less doubt that he has surrounded himself with a bunch of gun haters. Hating guns is in the DNA of this administration.

We who value the right to self-defense see the government, directed by the Obamites, taking over huge swatches of the economy. We see siege laid to the health care system, banking system and car industry. We see the Obamites taking advantage of the mess the Bushites handed them to consolidate power centrally, buying off state governments, effectively neutering them.

We see all of this and think: Guns are just a little further down on that list of targets. Why do we think that? Because they are. It is only a matter of time before any government goes after guns. History is on their side, not ours.

And that’s why I went early to the gun show last weekend to pick up a few rounds for a rainy day. Within a couple hours of the start of a two day gun show, the ammunition vendors’ tables looked like the locusts had been through. There were only two kinds of ammo left by noon. There was oddball ammo. The kind of stuff that only a couple hundred people in the world even know what guns shoot it. And there was crap ammo. When you try to buy that stuff, the guy who’s supposed to be selling it to you gets a panicked look and tries to change the subject.

I long for the days of cheap and plentiful ammo. I don’t know, or at least cannot verify, the reasons ammo is much more scarce and expensive. But I do know the psychology of panic. And that’s a lot of what we’re facing here. I experienced it early, before the election, when I realized we had two gun grabbing hoplophobes running against each other for president. I was pretty sure there was no way gun owners were going to get a win out of two losers.

But the panic turned into PANIC for many people, who somehow thought Republican promises were more than exhaled gas, when Obama won the election. Don’t get me wrong. I feel just as threatened by Obama as the rest of you. But it’s important to note that I felt no less threatened by McCain because I studied his record on gun rights. Abysmal.

What to do? Buy some overpriced ammo if that’s all you can get. Reload if you have the supplies. Try to stick to practicing with the cheapest stuff you can buy. Shooting 22 long rifle is more expensive than it used to be, but it’s still a lot less expensive than anything else. And only shoot what you can reasonably replace. Do what you can to answer the question in the title of the thread: Who’s got the ammo? I do. Until next time.

Buy a cheap MilSurp 98 Mauser/Mosin 91-30, and the cheap MilSurp ammo available for them. Learn to use them. Have your local ‘smith do minimal accurizing on them. Be surprised at HOW effective these clunkers really are. Be happy. Clean well after using corrosive MilSurp ammo. Be happy. Have a beer. Sigh in Contentment.

    No Worries!
